Gyms open doors to YMCA members after fire

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — An update to the fire investigation that damaged the Wilmington YMCA.

The YMCA CEO Dick Jones said in a news conference this afternoon they will open the facility again, they just don’t know when. The building was damaged in a fire Saturday night, caused by a sauna.

In the meantime, several facilities have opened their doors to help the Y’s members. The YWCA, O2 Fitness, the Wilmington Athletic Club and Second Wind Fitness Center will be honoring the memberships of all YMCA members until the facility is able to open its doors again.

“The staff has been working very hard to make sure that programs continue without too many lost steps,” Jones said. “We’ve been focusing on trying to get our membership base shored up so that they will have a place to go, but the real blessing in all this has been the outpouring of support from the community.”
