Haitian Boy Celebrates Birthday in U.S.

Medical relief efforts continue in Haiti after last month’s earthquake. A young Haitian boy recovering from his injuries here in Wilmington has reason to celebrate.

Carlens Delfils turned 13 today. His birthday party had cake and presents, but the gifts he’s received are much more important than anything he could unwrap.

Carlens came to the United States from Port Au Prince for medical treatment after his right hand was crushed saving his sister from falling rubble. For about three weeks, Carlens and his family have been staying with his doctor, Bill sutton.

“It’s louder,” Dr. Sutton said, “We’re kind of a loud family to begin with. Still its a good family a very satisfying and full feeling.”

“I like having another brother who is actually nice to me,” Katy Sutton, Dr. Sutton’s daughter, said.

Carlens says his hand is working just fine and Dr. Sutton says its healing nicely in a plastic brace with the colors of the Haitian flag. It helps to have mom around, who only got to the U.S. this week from a country that’s still torn apart.

Carlens story is a near miracle. He escaped the rubble of Haiti to get treatment in Wilmington. It may have saved his right hand entirely.

His doctor says he’ll make a full recovery but it’s not his health he’s wishing for as he blows out his candles.

“I wish to stay in america forever,” Carlens said.

Carlens delfils is having a community birthday party this Sunday if you’d like to celebrate with him. It’s from three to five at Thunder Alley on Magnolia Village Way in Leland.
