Halloween safety for kids and pets

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — As Halloween approaches, law enforcement officials are reminding families to take precautions to keep children safe while trick-or-treating, including carefully inspecting candy and staying visible to drivers. Veterinarians are also warning pet owners about the dangers some Halloween treats pose to animals.
“It’s a fun weekend, it’s Halloween, it’s Saturday night, so we want to encourage that but also be responsible,” said Lt. Jerry Brewer with the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
Brewer encourages parents to inspect candy before allowing children to eat it, noting that some hemp products come in packaging that resembles familiar candy brands.
He also urges families to take steps to help trick-or-treaters remain visible in busy neighborhoods.
“Being able to be seen, that’s our biggest thing because we get a lot of neighborhoods really congested, you know, use sidewalks when available, reflective gear, having a flashlight, everything to be noticed by anyone driving along,” said Brewer.
Brewer also reminds adults celebrating Halloween to plan a safe ride home if they drink alcohol, whether by choosing a designated driver or arranging another ride.
While families focus on children’s safety, veterinarians say pets also need extra attention during the holiday, particularly when it comes to candy.
“There’s all kinds of potential problems when it comes to candy,” said Gary Richter, an integrative veterinarian.
Richter said chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine, a compound that can cause vomiting and diarrhea. In large doses, it can lead to seizures or death; sugar-free candy can pose another serious risk to dogs.
“People who may have sugar-free candy at home, one of the most commonly used artificial sweeteners, Xylitol, is incredibly toxic to dogs, so it’s really important that we keep them away from that kind of stuff as well,” said Richter.
Richter also recommends leaving pets at home rather than taking them along while trick-or-treating. Costumes, unfamiliar people, strange noises, and other Halloween activities can make dogs anxious, potentially causing them to run away or bite out of fear.
Officials and animal health experts say a few simple precautions can help families and their pets enjoy a safe Halloween.
