Hampstead woman identified in deputy-involved crash on Hwy 17
PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has released the identified of the pedestrian hit and killed by a Pender County deputy.
NCSHP says Courtney Kirkham, 28, was wearing dark clothes and in the travel lane when she was hit. The incident happened around midnight on Oct. 10 on Highway 17 near Union Bethel Road.
The deputy, Nicholas Hesse, was not responding to an emergency call, however, troopers say it was raining at the time.
Hesse has been with the sheriff’s office in 2020. He is currently on paid administrative leave pending the ongoing investigation.
