Hannah Block dies at 96

Hannah Block was trailblazer. In 1961, she became wWlmington’s first female city council member. She helped organizer the first Azalea Festival. She produced the first Miss North Carolina pageant. In the 40’s she was the head lifeguard at Carolina Beach, the first female head lifeguard in the state.

It was in the 40’s that Hannah Block left a permanent mark – the restored Hannah Block USO Building, which is now a performing arts center. This is where Miss Hannah entertained the soldier boys, as she called them.

Hannah Block, age 96 – a life well-lived indeed.
