Hanukkah starts at sundown

Tonight is the first night of Hanukkah. Rabbi Harley Karz-Wagman explains the significance of the holiday, a Jewish dedication to serve God, the values that God teaches us, instead of the values we learn around us when the two conflict.

It is also a time to find your strength through caring for people around you. Friday night, Jewish families around the world will light the first Hanukkah candle, and chant blessings over their menorahs, or candle holders.

“Tonight we’re going to feel that warmth and energy, that wonderful sense of comfort that comes to us on this darkest, and beginning of the coldest time of year,” explained Rabbi Harley Karz-Wagman.

The Temple of Israel will have a first candle lighting ceremony at 8:00 p.m. tonight on Fourth and Market Street.
