Hazmat crews respond to chemical incident at Oak Island ice cream shop

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) — Emergency crews responded Tuesday to a hazardous materials incident at Lil & John’s Sweetreat Ice Cream Parlor on East Oak Island Drive after improperly mixed cleaning chemicals caused potential contamination.
According to officials, the business on Oak Island Drive was temporarily evacuated while emergency personnel worked to contain and clean up the situation.
Authorities said there is no danger to the surrounding area, and no road closures are in effect. However, pedestrians are being asked to avoid walking through the area while crews remain on scene, and motorists are urged to continue driving through without slowing down to watch the emergency response.
