Heading to the NC State Fair? BBB shares tips to avoid scams and overspending

RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — With the North Carolina State Fair opening Thursday, the Better Business Bureau of Eastern Carolinas is reminding visitors to keep consumer safety in mind while enjoying the food, rides and shopping.
The fair runs Oct. 15-25 in Raleigh, with more than 80 new food offerings and attractions expected to debut this year.
According to the BBB, 946,811 people attended the fair in 2025, and 95.8% of attendees were expected to return.
While the fair offers a different shopping experience than traditional stores, BBB officials say consumers should still take precautions when making purchases from vendors.
“The N.C. State Fair is a fall staple for many annually as they gather local attractions and unique vendors,” said Mallory Wojciechowski, president and CEO of BBB. “Despite shopping appearing differently at the fair, attendees should use their discretion and remember their rights as a consumer.”
Plan ahead and set a budget
The BBB recommends setting a spending limit before arriving at the fairgrounds, accounting for admission, food, attractions and purchases from vendors.
Thursday, Oct. 15, is the final day to purchase discounted advance admission tickets, according to the organization. After that, regular ticket prices apply, except for special discounts available to certain groups.
Visitors are also encouraged to review the fair’s daily schedule, research parking options and check food and vendor locations before attending.
Free parking is available on State Fair, Carter-Finley Stadium and Lenovo Center properties, with an exception noted for Wednesday, Oct. 21.
Research vendors before buying
The BBB advises fairgoers to research businesses before making purchases, especially when buying expensive products or services.
Consumers can check business reviews online.
The organization also recommends asking vendors for written refund and exchange policies, along with information about warranties or guarantees.
If a business has a permanent location, shoppers should request its address and phone number to help verify its legitimacy.
The BBB also suggests checking for business registration information and being cautious of vendors who pressure customers to make immediate purchases.
Consider how you pay
When possible, the BBB recommends using a credit card for purchases because credit card issuers may offer protections when transactions are fraudulent or disputed.
Consumers who feel pressured into buying something are encouraged to walk away and take time to research the product or business before making a decision.
Anyone who believes they have encountered a scam can report it through BBB Scam Tracker to help alert other consumers.
