Health expert warn parents about Tick risks ahead of Summer Break

LELAND, NC (WWAY)–As summer break approaches, many kids are ready to swap classrooms for campgrounds and spend more time outdoors. But health experts say families should be aware of one major concern this season: ticks.

Whether kids are roasting marshmallows, exploring hiking trails or helping set up tents, parents are encouraged to take precautions before heading outside.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says emergency room visits related to tick bites are expected to reach their highest levels since 2017 during this time of year.

Lindsey Ricci, a family nurse practitioner with CVS Pharmacy, says if you find a tick, it’s important to remove it immediately and thoroughly clean the area to help prevent illness.

Ricci says parents should also watch for symptoms that may develop after a tick bite, including fever, chills, body aches, joint pain or unexplained rashes.

“If you just have joint or muscle aches, and then a rash that you’re just like, ‘I don’t know where this came from,’ you definitely want to make sure that you’re following up promptly,” Ricci said.

As families prepare for summer camps and outdoor trips, Ricci recommends packing sunscreen with at least SPF 30, insect repellent and any necessary medications children may need during their time away from home.
