HEALTHWATCH: Increased Shigellosis cases in New Hanover County

NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (NEWS RELEASE) – The New Hanover County Health Department wants the community to be aware that additional cases of Shigellosis continue to be confirmed in our community. Shigellosis is a bacterial infection of the intestines. It causes symptoms such as: diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, headache, and nausea/vomiting. Symptoms usually occur 1-3 days after exposure and last 4-7 days. Shigella germs are present in the stool of infected humans. The germs are spread to the mouths of other people by direct contact with objects contaminated by an infected person’s stool.

The majority of cases are occurring in young children attending childcare and after school programs. If your child develops symptoms, please call your doctor and keep your child home from child care, school and after school programs. Children may spread this infection to their parents, siblings, or other children.

The following are good preventive steps to avoid Shigellosis transmission:

· Good hand washing is the most important way to prevent transmission to others.

· People who are sick with diarrhea or vomiting should stay home except to see a health care provider.

· If you are concerned that you may have been infected, contact your primary care provider.

Hand washing is the single most important measure to prevent the spread of shigellosis. This includes cleaning under the fingernails.
