Here’s some tips for a fun and safe Halloween

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The city of Wilmington’s fire stations will be handing out treats to children from 5:30 p.m. – 8 p.m. on Halloween.

Following are a few safety tips.

Pumpkins

  • Carve pumpkins on stable, flat surface
  • Children should draw a face on the outside of the pumpkin and let parents do the cutting
  • Place lighted pumpkins away from curtains and other flammable objects
  • Do not leave lighted pumpkins unattended

Children should

  • Go only to well-lit houses and remain on porches
  • Travel in small groups accompanied by an adult
  • Attach name and address to costumes
  • Bring treats home before eating them so parents can inspect them
  • Use flashlights, stay on sidewalks and avoid crossing yards
  • Cross streets at the corner, use crosswalks and do not cross between parked cars

Motorists should

  • Drive slowly
  • Watch for children in the street and on medians
  • Exit driveways and alleyways carefully
