A hero returns home

The Carolina Beach native who helped stop the Fort Hood gunman is on the road to recovery. Officer Kim Munley was released from a Texas hospital after undergoing knee replacement surgery.

Sergeant Kim Munley was named a hero in the fort hood tragedy after shooting Nidal Hasan and bringing an end to a brutal massacre. Tuesday the hero returned to the comfort of her own home.

On November 5th Sergeant Kim Munley was shot at least twice while stopping the Fort Hood gunman who killed more than a dozen people. Tuesday, Munley was released from Texas orthopedic hospital after knee replacement surgery. The hero will return home for at least six weeks of physical therapy. Despite the struggles, the event has helped bring the family together.

“We appreciate one another a lot more after having been through this,” said Munley’s father Dennis Barbour. “It’s just an example of how supporting one another can get you through anything as a family.”

Since being hospitalized, the former Wrightsville beach police officer has been a guest on the Oprah Winfrey show, praised by governor Bev Perdue, and developed a loyal following through her online blog, facebook, and Twitter.

Munley’s father says once Kim makes a complete recovery she plans to take a trip to visit the Wilmington area. Munley’s mother says Kim hopes to make it back for the Azalea Festival. Munley has been contacted about leading the parade as the grand marshal, but no word yet on whether or not that will happen.
