Historical marker celebrates surfing in Wrightsville Beach

WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A new historical marker went up today in Wrightsville Beach to celebrate the city’s history of surfing.

An unveiling ceremony was also held to honor surfing pioneer Berk Haywood Bridgers who is recognized as the city’s surfing pioneer. The new marker can be found near Waynick Boulevard and Bridgers Street.

Wrightsville Museum of History Vice President John Sideris says the new marker further solidifies the beach’s reputation and history.

“It helps to solidify the fact that we’re one of the top ten beaches in the country to come to for surfing and one of the top 100 beaches in the country just to come for pleasure and enjoyment,” said Sideris.
