Historical marker honors former Mayor
LELAND, NC (WWAY) — The town of Leland unveiled a new historical marker today. The marker recognizes the towns very first mayor Russell Baldwin. He served as mayor when the town was first incorporated in 1989.
Dozens braved the rain to be there when the marker was revealed. For Baldwin’s family this serves as confirmation that the place he loved, loved him back.
“He had a lot of vision for Leland. Back when Leland started no one could envision the population growth that would happen but he seemed to have a feel for that from the very beginning,” said Kent Baldwin, the former Mayor’s brother.
The town said the marker was important to honor Baldwin’s many accomplishments during his time as mayor.
