Holden Beach police investigating vandalism of sea turtle nest
HOLDEN BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Police are investigating after a protected sea turtle nest was vandalized overnight on Holden Beach, according to the Holden Beach Turtle Patrol.
The organization said Nest No. 75 was vandalized, but the eggs inside were found safe and intact.
“We are sad. We are angry. But, the good news is the eggs are safe and intact,” the Turtle Patrol said in an announcement shared by the Town of Holden Beach.
The organization said it plans to closely monitor the nest following the incident.
The Holden Beach Police Department is actively investigating. Anyone with information is asked to contact police at 910-842-6707.
The Turtle Patrol said vandalizing a protected sea turtle nest is a federal offense that can carry a fine of up to $50,000.
The Holden Beach Turtle Watch Program conducts conservation work involving protected sea turtles under authorization from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.
