Holden Beach Tailgate Fest

They were hoppin and boppin behind Sonny’s Lounge Sunday afternoon at Holden Beach. Joey Ray Therrien, better known as JR to his friends is the main attraction at the tailgate beachfest.
“we have tailgating if you want to tailgate, we have food and beverage we have a full band with a saxophone and guitars,, and we’ve Mickey and Brock and Sonny singing with the Boardwalk Band. I do a lot of oldies, 50s and 60s , Engelbert Humperdink to Buddy Holley to Ricky Nelson. I speciaize in Roy Orbison with the full wardrobe, the black and the glasses, and of course I come out as Elvis.. That’s the anchor of the show.”.

JR brings Elvis back to life in his act…but it’s his rendition of Roy Orbison that caught the attention of Sonny Boykin, the owner of Sonny’s Lounge… Sonny used to play in Roy Orbison’s band: “he said I was the next best thing to Roy Orbison and it is my favorite to sing.. ”

Roy is an icon. JR would like to be one some day as well. Maybe the tailgate beachfest will be just the break he’s looking for.
