Homeowners helped by FEMA to be listed

Thousands of North Carolinians are getting word from the federal government that their addresses will be released to the media.

The homeowners are on a list of people who received disaster aid following several major storms.

News organizations sued the government because they wanted to see how the federal emergency management agency has spent tax dollars.

In June a court ordered FEMA to release the addresses, but not the names of more than two million people who received aid between 1998 to 2004.

In North Carolina that’s more than 156,000 recipients, including people who were hit by Hurricanes Floyd, Isabel, Ivan and Bonnie and Tropical Storm Frances.

Those who received aid after Tropical Storm Ernesto are not included in the list, because they received aid after the cutoff date.
