Horry County firefighter arrested for sexual battery with a student

An Horry County firefighter is charged with sexual battery with a student.

Matthew James Oswald, 31, of Conway, was booked into the J. Reuben Long Detention Center at around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, according to detention center records.

His arrest comes after, between September and October of 2017, a 17-year-old girl says a sexual incident took place between the two at a home on McCall Loop in the Conway section of Horry County, according to a police report.

The sexual incident happened “while the victim was enrolled as a student at which the defendant was acting in a teaching capacity,” the report states.

Oswald was one of several firefighters honored for saving a 1-year-old child who fell into a swimming pool.

His bond has been set at $10,000, according to the detention center.

We have reached out to Horry County officials to find out his status with the department.
