NC House, Senate begin debate on $19B budget

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – The North Carolina General Assembly has
started debate on the final budget developed by House and Senate
Democrats over the past few weeks.

The Senate and House began discussing Tuesday the $19 billion
compromise to run government in the new fiscal year starting
Thursday. Both chambers must vote to approve the agreement twice
before it’s sent to Gov. Beverly Perdue’s desk.

Lawmakers also had to narrow a $519 million gap created because
Congress hasn’t approved additional Medicaid funds as earlier
expected.

Democratic Sen. Linda Garrou told colleagues the measure will
prevent large numbers of public schoolteachers from losing their
jobs this fall.

A House Democrat – Rep. Earl Jones – urged fellow members to
oppose the bill because it fails to consider new revenues through
legalizing video poker again.
