How ‘hipster’ is Wilmington?
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Is Wilmington the next hipster city? Some folks in Austin, TX, think so. We went on a hunt to figure out what hipster is in Wilmington.
A quick search on Yelp turns up the most hipster place in town is Satellite. With Hipster Ale on the beer list, these people know all about what it is to be hipster. Don’t they?
“Well, beatnik like the ’50s, like Jack Kerouac,” said one woman.
“That’s a hard definition to give, and it depends on who you ask,” said Tripp Speight, another customer at Satellite.
Hipsters are creative, ironic and cool so they say.
“Those are all good things,” Emma Hennett said. “I don’t know if they equate to hipster but they make Wilmington a cool place to live.”
Hipster doesn’t know its hipster. Kind of like Wilmington.
The online magazine CultureMap Austin says our cool creative community makes us hipster.
“I don’t know that locals at least would say that it’s any different than it’s always been,” said Steven Harris, who works at Planet in downtown Wilmington.
“I don’t believe in the term hipster, which I’m sure a lot of people would say is the ultimate hipster thing to say,” he said.
By the way, he’s right about that.
“All I’m really trying to say is I don’t know where they are coming from. I will say it’s a nice town,” Harris said
A nice town with a funky eclectic vibe, a town that’s as unaware as it is on the edge, as progressive as it is antique. Wilmington is a cool place.
“Yeah, it is it is a cool place,” Harris said, “but why wouldn’t they just say that?”
