WINNABOW, NC (WWAY) — While many people look forward to celebrating the Fourth of July with fireworks, the loud noises can be frightening for pets.

Animal advocates are encouraging pet owners to take a few simple precautions to help keep their animals safe and reduce anxiety during holiday celebrations.

Paws Place Dog Rescue recommends creating a quiet, comfortable space inside the home where pets can retreat during fireworks. A bedroom, bathroom, or another low-noise area can help animals feel more secure.

The rescue also advises keeping pets indoors whenever possible or on a leash if they must go outside. Frightened animals can easily bolt after being startled by fireworks, making it important to ensure pets are wearing identification tags and have updated microchip information.

Rachel Merkle, kennel manager at Paws Place Dog Rescue, said keeping pets occupied can also help ease their stress.

“Anything to help keep their mind occupied, whether that’s little enrichment toys, enrichment games, sitting in there with them just like this, giving them little pets and making sure they’re taken care of,” said Merkle.

If a pet does go missing, a microchip can significantly improve the chances of a reunion. Most veterinary clinics and animal shelters can scan a pet’s microchip to identify its owner.

Experts recommend checking that both a pet’s microchip registration and contact information are current before the holiday weekend begins.
