Humpday Health: Northside community health kick-off next week

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover Regional Medical Center is partnering with other organizations to help Wilmington’s Northside community.

The Northside is loosely defined as the area east of Third Street, south of Nixon Street, and north of Market Street.

You can come to D.C. Virgo Preparatory Academy Monday for food, fun, and fellowship. You can also take a community health survey.

“We worked to formulate the questions that are easy to understand, but at the same time, they address issues that are directly related to the community,” said Marissa Bryant, who is part of NHRMC’s Health Equity Project.

The survey is part of an initiative to improve the health and well-being of all who live on the Northside.

“We’re gonna use that to assess the needs of the community and see what kind of resources they want to improve their health and overall well-being,” Bryant said.

Bryant says showing people the resources are out there may be more effective than waiting for them to try to get help on their own.

“Sometimes we need to realize that instead of waiting for people to reach in, we need to reach out to the community and build those relationships to where they aren’t afraid to search for resources that are available to help,” Bryant said.

The YMCA, YWCA, and Feast Down East are a few of the organizations already involved.
