Humpday Health: Using balls at the gym to spice up your workout
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — “If you see something in your gym that you don’t know what to do, there’s trainers, there’s managers, there’s even your peers that can help you come up with different things,” said health expert Evonne Varady.
The gym is the place for athletes to train so they’ll be prepared before they hit the ball field, but did you know there are balls at the gym to enhance your workout?
A “Both Sides Up”, or BOSU, ball is an inflated rubber hemisphere used for lots of different exercises. It allows you to work on your balance and your whole body will feel the burn after using it.
“Using the BOSU ball, we covered almost your entire body. Everything is engaged to keep the balance on the ball,” said Varady.
The weighted ball can be used in a variety of ways and cover many different muscle groups.
“Using the weighted ball, depending on what exercises, we were using the abs, we were using shoulders, we were using mostly the core, we could have added some legs into that,” said Varady.
It’s easy to get burned out with the same old routine at the gym. Mixing in some different workouts with the BOSU or weighted ball can help alleviate that feeling.
“Coming into the gym every day, your workouts get boring, so by adding these new little toys into your workout just makes everything a little bit more exciting, a little bit more challenging,” said Varady.
So the next time you want to break a sweat, choose a ball instead of a dumbbell.
