Hundreds of gallons of kerosene spill in Carolina Beach

CAROLINA BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A portion of Canal Drive in Carolina Beach remained closed Friday morning as crews worked to clean up a kerosene spill.

The Carolina Beach Fire Department says it happened around 7:30 Thursday night at the Scotchman on Canal Drive.

Fire crews say a tanker truck was delivering kerosene to underground tanks and as he was filling the tanks, the dispensing unit came out. Between 500 and 600 gallons of kerosene spilled onto the asphalt.

Firefighters managed to stop the fuel from going into the storm drains, but some of the kerosene did spill into the yacht basin.

The delivery company sent out a hazmat team to clean up the spill.

No word on how long the 300 block of Canal Drive will remain closed.
