Folks spend day ‘behind bars’ in Southport
SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — A number of Southport residents spent the day behind bars, but it was all for a good cause.
The event is part of MDA’s annual Lock Up to fight muscular dystrophy. Participants raise bail money by making calls to family and friends during their time in jail.
MDA executive director Melissa Sinclair said the money raised today helps kids right in the Southport community.
“Our goal is to bring the community out, serve time in our mock jail here today, raise bail money, and we use that to support our summer camp program for special needs children living with muscular dystrophy,” Sinclair said.
Sinclair said their goal was to raise a little more than thirty thousand dollars at today’s event.
