Hundreds of NC teachers can reapply for jobs

CHARLOTTE — Hundreds of teachers laid off from a North Carolina school district will be able to reapply for their jobs after the district found out it will receive more state money than administrators had anticipated.

WSOC-TV reports Friday that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Superintendent Peter Gorman says the district fired several hundred teachers in a worst-case budget scenario. But budget issues eased when the state decided to raise taxes to raise more money.

District leaders said they’ll work all weekend drawing up specific plans for rehiring some of the laid-off teachers and hope to have those positions posted next week.

Officials aren’t sure how many of the more than 600 teaching positions cut can be saved, but Gorman says it will be a substantial number.
