Hundreds protest proposed NC school funding cuts

ASHEVILLE — Hundreds of parents crammed into a hot high school gym to protest proposed education budget cuts.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Tuesday that about 1,000 people packed into the corners of a school gymnasium southwest of Asheville to protest statewide cuts of teachers and school
programs.

Proposed cuts could increase average class size by two students and eliminate more than 6,000 teachers’ jobs across the state.

Parents questioned whether the state was spending money wisely and urged legislators to raise taxes. Some wore red to protest budget-cutting.
