At least 1 dead as Hurricane Dean bears down on Caribbean

CASTRIES, St. Lucia (AP) — Authorities say Hurricane Dean is being blamed for at least one death as the storm moves through the Caribbean.

Dean, which has strengthened into a Category 3 storm with 125-mile-an-hour sustained winds, has ripped the roofs from homes and knocked out power on the islands of St. Lucia and Martinique.

Police say a man was swept away in a rain-swollen river while attempting to retrieve a cow, accounting for the storm's first death.

Dean is expected to strengthen over the warm waters of the Caribbean, hit Jamaica on Sunday and climb to Category 4 status before clipping Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. It is projected to steer into the Gulf of Mexico by Wednesday, threatening the U.S.-Mexico border area.
