Hurricanes begin 10th anniversary celebration, hope fresh look leads to another playoff run
RALEIGH (AP) — Here's how Erik Cole spent his way-too-long summer: He played in the world championships, had eye surgery and lifted weights up to six days a week.
And, oh yeah, he dwelled on how quickly the Carolina Hurricanes fell from Stanley Cup champions to playoff no-shows.
Cole says thinking about missing the playoffs last season kept him motivated while he trained.
When pre-season practice resumes a week from tomorrow, the Hurricanes won't have to worry about those pesky short-summer blues or the hangover that typically follows a deep playoff run.
Almost exactly five months after Rod Brind'Amour scored the final goal of an otherwise disappointing 2006-07 season, Cole is eager for a fresh start.
