Icy roads could cause hazardous driving conditions

The North Carolina Department of Transportation said the roads could be dangerous to drive as temps go down throughout the evening and overnight.

The DOT has tried to salt and sand bridges and main roads to prepare, but are advising you not to drive if you don’t have to.

If you do slide on black ice, don’t slam on the brakes. Let off the gas slowly, and turn your steering wheel in the direction of the slide to gain traction.

Also four-wheel drive doesn’t help on ice.

Allen Pope of the NC DOT said, “One of the misconceptions about four-wheel drives is that they will help you get going because you have all four wheels turning or it doesn’t help you at all once you get on top of ice, and if you’re trying to apply brakes or try to slow down.”

If you do have to drive, drive slowly and keep plenty of space between you and other vehicles.
