In Her Shoes

On Saturday, Men in our community took a stand against violence against women. That is, if they could balance in high heels.

It was the annual ‘Walk a mile in her shoes’ campaign. Men from all facets of the community put on their high heels and strutted in protest.

“Well, it’s a great cause, it’s great publicity, and it’s always a fun time,” said UNCW student Wesley Dinsick. “We’ve been out here probably the last three years they’ve done it and we’ve always had a good time doing it.”

“It really matters to see that the men are coming out and supporting them, said Joy Alford Brand, New Hanover County’s Domestic Violence prosecutor. “Stronger families equal safer communities so it’s a community based response.”

The annual “walk a mile in her shoes” protest is especially significant this year. In the past month, three brutal incidents have shocked the community. Two women were attacked and seriously injured and New Hanover detention officer Tarica Pulliam was gunned down by her ex-boyfriend.

Sheriff’s deputies at the ‘walk a mile’ event said it’s important to show support for all victims.

“Any time law enforcement can get involved and bring awareness to this type of activity, it’s got to be a positive,” said Detective Todd Vernon from the New Hanover County Family Violence Unit.

The walk took place on Water street in downtown Wilmington. Participants paid twenty dollars to walk. Proceeds will benefit the rape crisis center of Coastal Horizons, which serves all of southeastern North Carolina.
