UPDATE: Information about yard debris pick-up and drop-off

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — There is a lot to clean up around the region after Hurricane Matthew, and that means questions about what to do with all the debris.

Bladen County: Bladen County solid waste debris site will be open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m., and will be receiving vegetative debris – leaf & limb disposal only! Please do not mix household garbage or other building debris. Debris will be weighed at 1522 Mercer Mill Road and instructions will be given as to where to unload.

Brunswick County: Brunswick County will accept storm-related debris (including yard debris, household items like white goods, and construction and demolition debris) at no charge through Monday, Oct. 24 at the Brunswick County Landfill (172 Landfill Road NE, Bolivia) and at the County convenient sites. Residents who already paid to dispose of storm-related debris may present a receipt to request a refund.

Residents taking yard debris to the landfill are still encouraged to do so in the mornings, as large trucks are typically coming off their routes between 1 and 3 p.m., and back-ups are more likely at that time. Residents inside municipal limits should contact their municipality about debris disposal options in their area.

Carolina Beach: Storm debris may include a combination of bundles and/or bags meeting the following criteria:

  1. Bundles shall consist of limbs and shrubs no longer than four feet in length and no more than six inches in diameter.
  2. Only paper bags shall be utilized.
  3. Bundles and bags shall be 50 pounds or less each.

Do not place any debris on utilities such as meter boxes, cable boxes, manholes, etc.

All debris shall be placed at the edge of right of way of the road immediately. Pickups will begin on Monday October 10, 2016 and continue until Friday October 21, 2016.

For household debris removal please call Town Hall to schedule a pick up at (910) 458-2983 or (910) 458-2999.

Holden Beach: Yard debris pickup resumes Friday.

Yard debris must be secured in a biodegradable bag or bundled in a maximum length of five feet and 50 pounds in weight. A total of ten items will be picked up, which could include a combination of bundles of brush and limbs meeting the required length and weight and/ or biodegradable bags with grass clippings, leaves, etc.

No pickups will be made on vacant lots or construction sites. Any additional yard debris that does not comply with these requirements will not be picked up.

New Hanover County: Residents in the unincorporated areas of New Hanover County can start placing yard debris at their curbsides beginning today. Only vegetative debris, such as branches and vines, from the storm will be removed.Residents are asked to place the debris neatly within five feet of the curb, away from the street, drainage ditches, and three feet away from fire hydrants, street signs, mailboxes and parked cars. Debris should not be bagged, and larger branches should be cut into twelve-foot lengths or less. Do not include household waste or construction debris; it will not be picked up.

All other waste, including construction debris, can be brought by homeowners to the New Hanover County Landfill (5210 U.S. Highway 421 North) during regular hours: Monday-Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 6:30 a.m. until noon. Many items can be disposed at the landfill free of charge to homeowners.

For information about how to dispose of additional debris, visit the Department of Environmental Management’s website or call (910) 798-4400 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays.

Residents of the City of Wilmington, Carolina Beach, Kure Beach or Wrightsville Beach, should contact their respective municipality for directions.

Note from CFPUA: We strongly ask that people be mindful of where they are piling up their debris for pickup and avoid putting it on top of sewer cleanouts and water meter boxes. If people put debris on top of cleanouts and meter boxes, it can cause damage to them, both when it piles up and when it gets picked up.

Debris piles also cause trouble with our water meter reading work. If we can’t access the meter, the property enters into our estimated billing process. Future meter reading nails down the exact cost, but it usually takes an additional bill cycle to work it out.  Neither CFPUA nor our customers want that circumstance to happen, especially when it can be avoided.

Oak Island: Residents should gather disaster-related debris from their property move it to the nearest right-of-way (ROW) for collection. DO NOT include brown and white goods from your home in this collection – the Town will only pick up storm-related debris. This pickup is for materials already removed by Hurricane Matthew – the Town will not pick up construction debris form post-storm work done to houses/decks/walkways, etc.

DO NOT Place debris on water meters, manhole lids, storm drains, power boxes or lean items against street signs, light poles etc.

SEPARATE YOUR DEBRIS If debris is not separated we cannot pick it up. Each Type of material will need to be placed in separate piles. Place construction debris in a pile and yard debris in a separate pile. Yard debris will still need to be separated into leaves in one pile and limbs in another — just follow our normal yard debris requirements, posted on our website.

Pender County: Running Deer Landfill, located at 7214 NC Hwy 210, Rocky Point, will accept yard debris from Hurricane Matthew. The landfill will not charge Pender County homeowners.

The hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The landfill is accessible after-hours. The left-gate at the site should be used for Rocky Point yard waste and the right-hand gate is for Hampstead yard waste.

This service is for homeowners only. Contractors are not eligible for free drop-off.

At this time, do not leave your yard debris on the state right-of-way.

Sunset Beach: Sunset Beach activated their contract with Crowder Gulf Management Company that provides disaster debris collection, processing and disposal services in accordance to Federal Emergency Management and Federal Highway requirements.

Sunset Beach has relaxed their leaf and limb program requirements due to the significant amount of tree and vegetation damage and some property damage.  The roadside placement and collection of debris related to Hurricane Matthew has been expanded to include damaged electronics, large appliances, hazardous waste, vegetative debris, construction debris and household garbage.  A diagram of the materials placement can be picked up at Town Hall or accessed on the website.

We have also relaxed the length of time debris may be placed in the public right-of-way to allow residents additional time to place Hurricane Matthew related damaged items in the public right-of-way.

Sunset Beach is currently coordinating with the company on the pick-up day and/or days.  We hope to begin this process within the next seven days and will update the website (www.sunsetbeachnc.gov), Facebook and e-alert notification when a date or dates have been finalized.

The City of Wilmington says yard debris pick-up will be on regular schedule next week for city trash customers. The city also offered these tips for faster debris pick-up:

  • Limbs must be no more than 4 feet in length and 6 inches in diameter.
  • City trash customers can set out up to 7 cubic yards of yard waste for pick up at one time. This is equal to a pile approximately 5-feet wide, 11-feet long and 3½-feet high – about the same size as 8 large size garbage or recycling carts. If volume exceeds this amount, it will not be picked up next week.
  • All loose yard waste (grass clippings, pine straw, vines, pine cones and leaves) should be in a bag or container.
  • Please do not mix non-organic items (roofing tiles, scrap lumber, rocks, etc.) with your yard waste.
