Inspections of Wrightsville Beach Bridge require lane closures

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Heads up on the roads next week if you’re traveling to or from Wrightsville Beach.

Part of the U.S. 74 Bridge over the Intracoastal Waterway in Wrightsville Beach will have intermittent lane closures beginning Monday, October 2. The closures are needed for crews to inspect various sections of the bridge.

The closures will begin at 9 a.m. Monday and continue until 4 p.m. through Tuesday, October 3.

“These inspections help us ensure the safety our bridges,” said Bridge Maintenance Engineer Adam Britt. “We have scheduled this work outside of peak travel times for the convenience of the motoring public.”

The Federal Highway Administration requires all bridges to be inspected once every two years. Regular inspections help the department identify whether a bridge needs maintenance and repair. If inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will be repaired or closed immediately until the repairs can be made. If necessary, weight restrictions will be placed on a bridge. The department will not keep a bridge open if it is determined to be unsafe.

There will be no detours, but drivers should expect delays. Transportation officials urge drivers to use caution while traveling through the work zone.
