Interim superintendent Les Tubb gets Brunswick Co. Schools job full time

BOLIVIA, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County School Board took about four months to find a new superintendent, but the search ended very close to home.

This afternoon the school board voted to give the job to Col. Les Tubb, who was already serving as interim superintendent.

Tubb took over in late November days after the board fired Edward Pruden. It was the second time Tubb served as interim superintendent. He also held the position before Pruden started in 2010.

“We’ve got to work on morale, we lost a large number of teachers, New Hanover County, every school system has lost teachers in North Carolina,” Tubb said. “We have to find a way to improve our morale so we don’t lose as many teachers.”

Tubb’s contract starts April 1 and runs through June 30, 2018. It pays him a base salary of $144,000.

According to a news release, the board says its eight-week nationwide posting for the job yielded 39 candidates from 10 states, including 23 applicants from North Carolina.

Tubb has more than 30 years experience in Brunswick County Schools. He has held several positions, including science teacher, assistant principal, principal, director of secondary education, director of career and technical education and athletic director. Col. Tubb also served in the military as a member of the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division and the NC National Guard.

We will have much more on Tubb’s selection coming up on WWAY NewsChannel 3 starting at 5 p.m.
