“Invisible Man” banned from Randolph schools

RAMSEUR, N.C. (AP) – The Randolph County School Board has voted to take Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man” from its library shelves after a parent complained about the book’s content.

The Asheboro Courier-Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/1dpXuZz ) the board voted 5-2 at its meeting this week to remove all copies of the book from library shelves.

Board members took the action in response to a letter from the mother of a Randleman High School junior who said the book was “too much for teenagers.” The woman also objected to the language in the book and its sexual content.

The book is on a list of suggested supplemental works for high school students compiled by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction.

“Invisible Man” is a first-person narrative by a black man who considers himself socially invisible.
