Iran confirms US talks

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's ambassador to Iraq confirms he's going to meet tomorrow with the US ambassador in Baghdad.

The talks, to be devoted to security in Iraq, represent the second official meeting between the US and Iran in the past two months, following a diplomatic freeze imposed by the US after the 1979 Embassy takeover in Tehran.

Iran's government news agency says the ambassador will be accompanied by officials from the Iranian foreign ministry and national security council.

Baghdad has been eager to get the talks going, seeing the US and Iran as the nations most crucial to its future. Iraqi officials are to attend tomorrow's talks as observers.

After talks in May, the US continued to accuse Iran of arming Iraqi Shiites and fomenting violence against American troops.
