‘Iron Man 3’ flying over Cape Fear River; other productions along for the ride

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Hollywood East is alive and well.

At least Four productions are actively filming in the Cape Fear, and one more with big names is on the way.

The cast and crew of the big-budget blockbuster “Iron Man 3” were at it again Monday, this time full of wet and wild stunts. About a dozen people swung from a rig over the Cape Fear River between PPD and the Convention Center, dropping to the water while screaming.

Over the weekend, “Iron Man 3” producer Kevin Feige said watching the stunts come together makes the whole movie worth it.

“There’s nothing more satisfying than working on a movie for a year and a half on the concept art and the script pages and then being there on the day and watching it come to life is pretty awesome,” Feige said.

IM3 fans marvelled at the river stunt Monday, waiting all day to see more.

Star Robert Downey Jr. stopped my the big ComiCon convention in California Saturday. He said fans are what it’s all about.

“It took everyone a while to catch on, but the audiences have been driving the direction that movies go for quite some time now,” Downey said.

There is still no word exactly how the theatrics will play out in the movie, but director Shane Black says fans can expect something different.

“Suspense. There you go. Not just action. Hopefully we’ll get some really good tension out of this thing too. It will feel different. You’ll see,” Black said.

“Iron Man” is not alone in Wilmywood. Just blocks from the water set-up, the TV series “Revolution” began shooting Monday.

The HBO movie “Mary & martha,” starring Hilary Swank was shooting on a private road near the Intracoastal Waterway.

Nicholas Sparks was in Southport to see his book “Safe Haven” being turned into a movie over the weekend.

And extras are being cast for “We’re the Millers,” which stars Jennifer Aniston.
