Is 35 mph too fast on Oak Island’s residential streets?
OAK ISLAND, NC (StarNews) — Miles Varner doesn’t feel safe walking on his street.
Northwest Third Street, like dozens of other residential streets on the island, is a straight shot between thoroughfares Oak Island Drive and Yacht Drive.
Varner worries about the conflict between pedestrians and bicyclists versus vehicles, especially large trucks or delivery vehicles that may be in more of a hurry.
To address concerns like Varner’s, the town council is moving ahead with plans to lower the speed limit on town-maintained roads down to 25 mph from 35 mph.
