Jordan finally to join NC Sports Hall of Fame

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) – A long overdue honor for one of Wilmington’s favorite sons. Michael Jordan is finally being inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

The ceremony will take place in Charlotte on Dec. 14 at halftime of the game between the Toronto Raptors and Jordan’s Bobcats.

The hall’s board of directors elected Jordan in 1993 after he led the Chicago Bulls to the third of six NBA championships. But the Laney High School grad had retired from basketball and was playing minor-league baseball, starting a long wait for a hall that requires inductees to personally accept the invitation.

Jordan, who won a national championship at UNC in 1982, six NBA titles with the Bulls and an Olympic gold medal as part of the Dream Team in 1992, was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.
