Judge agrees to delay in Cannon sentencing
CHARLOTTE, NC (AP) — A federal judge has agreed to delay sentencing for former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon in his public corruption case.
Area media outlets report the hearing is now scheduled for Oct. 14. U.S. District Judge Frank Whitney agreed Thursday to a defense request to move the hearing from Sept. 25 so a New York psychiatrist can testify in Cannon’s behalf.
Cannon pleaded guilty in June to taking more than $50,000 in bribes from FBI undercover agents. An affidavit in the case says Cannon sought more than $1 million in kickbacks during a meeting in his office. He was arrested last March and resigned the same day. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
