Judge orders jail to screen kidnapping suspect’s mail after intimidation charge
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — A judge today ordered mail sent from jail by a man accused of kidnapping a six-year-old girl earlier this year be screened after he allegedly sent her a letter.
Douglas Nelson Edwards made his first court appearance today on a charge of intimidating a witness. Investigators charged Edwards with the crime after they say he sent the alleged kidnapping victim a letter last week trying to keep her from testifying against him.
Today a judge granted the state’s request to prohibit Edwards from any communication with alleged victim and her family, and that any written communication Edwards sends from the jail other than mail to his attorney be screened before it is sent. Edwards faces a maximum sentence of 47 months in prison on the intimidation charge.
Edwards remains in jail under $1 million bond. He is due back in court Dec. 8.
He has reportedly admitted to taking the girl from in front of her home in September. She was later found chained to a tree off River Road.
