Juneteenth Committee holds two-day virtual forum to celebrate the holiday

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington’s Juneteenth Committee celebrated the holiday with a virtual forum.

Speakers from all over the state joined in on a Zoom call to discuss topics like economics and the importance of voting.

Dr. Terry Jackson spoke about systemic inequality.

He highlighted that for every dollar that a white household has, a black household only has 10 cents.

“Systemic inequality persists in the form of housing discrimination, unequal education, police brutality, mass incarceration, employment discrimination and massive wealth and opportunity gaps,” he said.

Natalie Stalling talked about the importance of voting.

Like many of the speakers, she said the voices of the protesters were being heard but to make sure the momentum continues in November.

“The protests have greater power if we take that protest to the ballot box in November,” Stalling said.

She emphasized the election is not just about the president.

“There are local and state elections that could formulate a powerhouse of like-minded individuals that care about issues that are important to us,” she said.

Saturday’s forum concluded with a prayer.

“Bless all of those with good hearts and good conscience. Wish that every good human being would find its place in Heaven. As we go forward, greet us in peace. God bless us all,” Abdul Rahman Shareef said.

The Juneteenth celebration will continue on Sunday at 3 p.m. with more speakers.

The event will be held on Zoom. Here is the information:
