Junior Reserves program features the life of a cannon crew at Fort Fisher
KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — A field artillery drill and look back at the life of General Braxton Bragg are happening at Fort Fisher this weekend.
On Friday, June 23rd, the 2017 summer program series continues with the second of nine Junior Reserves family activities called ‘Attention Cannoneers’. This event is from 10am to 2pm and will feature the site’s reproduction 12-pounder bronze Napoleon field piece. Under the command of a costumed interpreter, Junior Reserves attendees will learn the role of each member of the cannon crew and then practice a field artillery drill. In the interest of safety, the cannon will not be fired.
On Saturday you can learn about the life and legacy of General Braxton Bragg in the third installment in the ‘Beat the Heat’ Lecture Series.
Reverend Dennis Levin, retired US Army Lt. Colonel and historian, will be discussing the legacy of General Braxton Bragg. Gen. Bragg is a native North Carolinian educated at West Point and commissioned as an artillery officer during the Mexican-American War. He established a reputation as a strict disciplinarian, but also as a junior officer willing to publicly argue with and criticize his superior officers, including those at the highest levels of the Army. Rev. Levin’s free lecture begins at 2:00 pm in the Spencer theater.
All Fort Fisher programming is made possible by the Friends of Fort Fisher and its sustaining members, as well as from support from New Hanover County, the town of Carolina Beach, and the town of Kure Beach.
Fort Fisher State Historic Site is located at 1610 Fort Fisher Blvd S, Kure Beach, N.C. 28449.
