Jury selection begins in Pender County murder case

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) —  Jury selection began Tuesday in a Pender County murder case that could lead to the death penalty.

James Opelton Bradley is charged with the murder of Elisha Tucker, 34.

Her body was found in 2014 as investigators searched for the body of another woman that Bradley was later convicted of killing.

Jury selection began at the Pender County Judicial Annex and will continue Wednesday in downtown Wilmington at 9:00 a.m. The Pender County Courthouse cannot be used due to damage sustained in Hurricane Florence.

Several jurors were dismissed for extenuating circumstances, such as health or financial issues.

Jurors were given questionnaires that asked how they felt about using the death penalty.

Transportation is available for jurors from Pender to New Hanover County during the selection.

Bradley previously spent 25 years in prison for the 1988 murder of his eight-year-old stepdaughter.
