Kidnapping suspect indicted on new charges by grand jury


NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) – The man accused of kidnapping a 6-year-old girl in September now faces attempted murder charges.

New Hanover County District Attorney Ben David says a grand jury indicted Douglas Nelson Edwards on Monday.

He now faces additional sex offense and kidnapping charges, as well as the attempted murder charge.

According to warrants, Edwards, a convicted sex offender, admitted to taking the girl from the front yard of her home off of Carolina Beach Road.

The child was found the next morning chained to a tree off River Road. At the time, investigators said she girl was doing well.

Edwards remains in jail. His bond has been increased to $11.3 million.
