Kids get hands-on lessons in marine science
FORT FISHER, NC (WWAY) — Kids are getting a hands-on chance to learn about marine life and how to protect it. The Marine Quest Cape Crusaders Camp was at Fort Fisher today learning about protecting our dunes. Kids built their own eight-inch dunes, and protected them with fences and vegetation.
Students from UNCW’s marine science program then simulated hurricane force wind’s with a leaf blower to see which method best protected the dunes. The kids, ages eight through 10, say they like the hands-on learning.
“My favorite part was discussing the phytoplankton and how they’re good for the environment and bad for the environment,” camper Ethan Dillo said.
“All the stuff that is in the ocean is natural, and it’s an environment, and we need to leave it alone,” camper Brighton Tietjen said.
Campers are looking forward to visiting the Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital tomorrow. The camp, hosted by UNCW, continues through Friday.
