Kids, officers celebrate Hometown Heroes Week

Camp kids got an extra special treat Friday. Officers from the Wilmington Police Department flew into the YMCA on their helicopter.

To celebrate the final day of Hometown Heroes Week, campers got the chance to say thank you to the officers for keeping them safe. They presented cards and banners to show their appreciation, and then the kids got to climb in the helicopter.

Camper Brandon McNeill said, “It’s special because they’ve really helped the community out and if it wasn’t for them, the world would be out of control.”

“Thank you for helping us and thank you for keeping us safe, and thank you for catching all the bad guys and helping us,” said Ava Jay.

The police officers reminded the kids to stay away from strangers and make sure they know their address and phone number in case of an emergency.

During Hometown Heroes Week, kids also got to visit the Wilmington Fire Department and write thank you letters to members of the military.
