Lady charged in scam

FAYETTEVILLE — A Fayetteville woman has been accused of lying to a support group about cancer and her son’s death in Iraq to get more than $6,000.

The Fayetteville Observer reports Wednesday that 51-year-old Margaret Irene Haithcock is charged with obtaining property by false pretense.

A warrant said she told Triangle Divorce, Separation Support Group in January that she had cancer and that her son was killed in Iraq. The warrant states she told the group she needed several surgeries and wanted help with expenses.
