Lane closures begin Monday on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Drivers traveling on the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge over the Cape Fear River will likely encounter intermittent lane closures beginning next Monday.
NCODT says the closures are needed for crews to perform routine inspections.
The closures will start at 9 a.m. Monday, October 30, and continue until 3 p.m. each day through Thursday, November 2.
The Federal Highway Administration requires all bridges to be inspected once every two years. Regular inspections help the department identify whether a bridge needs maintenance and repair. If inspectors find a safety concern, the bridge will be repaired or closed immediately until the repairs can be made. If necessary, weight restrictions will be placed on a bridge. The department will not keep a bridge open if it is determined to be unsafe.
Although there will not be any detours, drivers are urged to seek alternate routes. Motorists are also advised to use caution while traveling through the work zone and expect possible delays.
