Late home economics teacher gives $1.5M to ECU
NEW BERN, N.C. — A home economics teacher has willed $1.5 million to East Carolina University to provide scholarships for students from four coastal North Carolina high schools.
The Sun Journal of New Bern reported Tuesday that the late Geraldine Mayo Beveridge made the bequest from an estate of more than $3 million. The 90-year-old woman died last May and had no
children.
The scholarships are restricted to graduates of Pamlico County High School, New Bern High School, East Carteret High School and Ocracoke High School.
Beveridge was from Mesic, a tiny community in Pamlico County, and taught in Carteret County schools. Her will also divides $1.2 million between two churches, the Ocracoke Preservation Society and a retired school employees group.
